Wealthy Women, Expensive Jewelry and Charity Events Can Be a Fatal Combination
Article by Ed Bagley
Home Is Where the Heart Stops – 4 Stars (Excellent)
Wealthy women love their jewelry and their causes, and charity events allow them to enjoy both. By participating, they become easy marks as donors, and also for criminals to exploit. Sometimes even kill. Four robberies at expensive apartments in tony districts draw the immediate attention of Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) as both the robberies of rich women and the escalated violence results in a brutal murder with the victim stuffed in her wall safe.
The motive in this case is easy to discern, but the opportunity is not, since the robber must have had inside information to commit his or her crime spree. Mystery novelist Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) proves a valuable help in solving this murder case due to his connections to important people and high society types in this Episode 7 of Season 1.
Bonus: See Detective Beckett go undercover as she dresses to the nines for a charity event. As Castle says, she cleans up well – that’s a huge understatement, Beckett proves to be a knockout.
Ghosts – 4 Stars (Excellent)
Twenty years ago three environmental radicals – (“terrorists” in today’s lingo) two women and a man – plot to blow up an oil tanker in protest. They believed no one was on board, and the tanker was empty. Moments before the blast, one of them women realizes the captain is on board and tries to save him, but the blast is premature, killing her and paralyzing the captain.
The male terrorist is subsequently caught and imprisoned for 15 years. The other woman escapes, takes on a new identity, and creates a new life for herself. Twenty years later, she ends up murdered in a bathtub filled with motor oil. To complicate matters, the victim was in the process of selling her story to a real-life crime writer.
Mystery writer Rick Castle, not sensing any competition from the crime writer, suspects that she may be the murderer. Detective Kate Beckett is looking for facts, not conjecture. Together, they sift through three suspects before uncovering a mystery woman who inadvertently “solves” the case in this Episode 8 of Season 1.
Bonus: Find out who wins and who loses as Beckett joins Castle in a card game with his mother (Martha Rodgers as Susan Sullivan), Beckett’s NYPD captain (Ruben Santiago-Hudson as Roy Montgomery), and two co-workers (Jon Huertas as Javier Esposito and Seamus Dever as Kevin Ryan).
Little Girl Lost – 3 Stars (Good)
A 2-year-old, adopted girl is kidnapped with both parents at home. The kidnapper wants a 0,000 cash ransom, and seems to know that the parents can afford it. Unless it is pure luck, the kidnapper seems to know the parents’ routine well enough to enter the home and exit with the toddler.
Detective Kate Beckett and mystery novelist Rick Castle are joined on this case by a FBI agent who also happens to be Beckett’s former boyfriend. The three sleuths eliminate three suspects while Castle and the FBI agent compete for Kate’s attention, neither getting very far.
Castle makes the money drop, but the kidnapper eludes detection by creating a masterful misdirection of deception. In the end, Castle, who was all but locked out of this case by the former boyfriend, solves the mystery of whodunit with two very clever observations, gaining Kate’s attention and gaining more of her respect in the process in this Episode 9 of Season 1.
Bonus: Find out if Castle is pushed out of Beckett’s thoughts by her returning boyfriend, and find out why she is so upset by the book cover of Castle’s first novel on Nikki Heat, the main character who is based on Detective Kate Beckett of the NYPD.
A Death in the Family – 4 Stars (Excellent)
A car with 5 parking tickets on the back window is towed off the street in Harlem. Inside is the body of a plastic surgeon, who wasn’t noticed because of the vehicle’s tinted windows and a sunshade across the front window. Turns out it was a premeditated mob hit, and not a patient surgery gone awry.
Detective Kate Beckett and mystery novelist Rick Castle can find no connection between the victim and the mob, but use their own connections to interview a former mob capo, looking for the capo to identify a “signature-style” of mob assassination that might lead to the killer. The mob wanted information from the surgeon, and when he would not give it, they tortured him unmercifully before suffocating him to death.
Once again it is Castle who helps solve the case in this Episode 10 of Season 1. Bonus: See what disaster happens to Beckett’s ex-FBI boyfriend who bends the rules to help Beckett interview a mob hit man, and also find out what Castle discovers when he covertly examines the file on the untimely death of Beckett’s mother.
